Auto Set Date/Time

I would love to have the option to sync the Fly6 date & time to the PC's clock when I plug it in.  A real advantage when we transition in and out of Daylight Savings Time in the US.

Thanks.

Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the great suggestion. Our engineering team are actively investigating this feature and it is something we hope to bring to our devices in the future.

Update

Hi Joe - some of the team returned from China recently and advised that to accomplish your suggestion, Fly6 would need to install specific software on your computer. This is not something we want to do as it adds all sorts of complications to the simple process of using the device in general.

You will be pleased to know we are moving to a new microprocessor set which will allow our future products to sync the time & date with your smartphone. This would mean doing away with the manual setting of your time & date on your device.

Regards
Andrew

That's disappointing news but thanks for the update.

Hello --

I found this thread, and was wondering what is the current status on the new micro which will autosync with the host computer.  I am a new owner, computer literate, and I find the current manual method of setting date & time to be surprisingly rinky-dink given the impressive engineering that has gone into other aspects of the unit.  Having been recently an accident victim, it seems to me that having an accurate and verifiable timestamp on the videa is crucial to the unit's utility as an evidence logger, so this manual method does not impress me.  A few questons/comments:

1. Is there any way to verify the date & time setting against the host system time?

2. When the new micro is available, will you be offering some sort of retrofit or upgrade deal?

3. Personally I would have no trouble with installing software on my system to do the date and time setting.  It should be made available as an option.  Obviously when the new micro with autosyc becomes available it would no longer be necessary and could be uninstalled.

Thanks for an otherwise great product that I look forward to using.

Hi Jeff - I'm not 100% clear on what you mean by "micro" however I will try and address your queries as best I can.
  1. no, we don't have the capacity to do that and won't with this generation of Fly6
  2. Again, not sure what "micro" means in this context. Please elaborate
  3. While you might not mind, we want to deal with the needs of most and our studies show that most of our customers would not want to install further software. In addition, we are trying to make things as simple as possible. This is why we will have an auto update feature in Fly12.

cheers

Andrew

Hi, Andrew --

Apologies for the shorthand.  By "micro" I was referring to the "new microprocessor set" that you referred to which will do the autosync of date/time with the host system.

So in my q.2, I was querying whether when the new generation Fly6 comes out you would consider offering an upgrade or retrofit for customers who own the first generation.  I do consider an accurate and verifiable method of setting the time to be crucial to the unit's function, so that is certainly an offer that I would avail myself of if it were available.

As far as q.3, I will just say that if software to manage the date and time setting were made available I would not hesitate to install it.  I can understand if you decide not to include it in the unit as an automatic self-installer, but if it were available from the website I would definitely download and install it myself.

Thanks.  I have been on a couple of rides since I last wrote, and in reviewing clips of the video it looks quite good.

Jeff

HI Jeffery - thanks for the clarifications.

We don't have any timeframes for launching a new Fly6 model so couldn't say with any confidence how we will deal with upgrades if at all. I know that when I buy my next iPhone, they don't offer me any retrofit or upgrade deals! The current Fly6 does have a verifiable time and date stamp. It would depend on how important the reason is for needing the exact time and date (like is this part of a forensic investigation and going to court). If this is critically important to you, simply hold your smartphone in front of the Fly6 each time before a ride showing the time and date. This would calibrate the video footage with the time & date stamp. We have had a number of people use the footage to successfully prosecute motorists using Fly6. The time & date stamp has never been an issue.

Happy to hear you are enjoying your Fly6 and hope this answers your queries!

Thanks, Andrew.  That seems like a reasonable workaround solution until the new model becomes available.  I doubt the internal clock of the Fly6 would drift too much, so probably taking a quick clip of the smartphone clock once a month would be sufficient.  If I can figure out how to get the smartphone clock to display seconds I'm all set.

The problem with the current method is that it is impossible to know exactly how long it will take to execute the procedure, since it depends on human interaction and system latency.  The procedure takes a non-zero amount of time to execute from the point at which you save the text file, and you have to make a guess as to the time you enter based on what you think the actual time will be once the procedure completes execution.  That's what I don't like about it.

Jeff

Hi Jeff - we find that you tend to get pretty close to the mark the more you do it. It may not be atomically correct in this version but it seems to be accurate enough to get the job done. With Fly12, it will take the time & date from your smartphone which we hope is more accurate!

I just executed the workaround, and I found that the Fly6 clock was 36 seconds behind my smartphone.  I'll have to try executing the time setting procedure again and see if I can get closer than that.  But just saving a single image from this clip would suffice as a calibration for the timestamp.

My Fly6 (new model) loses about 30 hours per week i set it correctly last Sunday the recording i made today(28/06/2015) at 07:20  has a time stamp of 27/06/2015 00:19

Hi Nigel,

Do you have the most up to date Firmware?

This had a fix for time drift.

Hope this helps,

Thanks but yes i have got the latest firmware installed

Hi Nigel,

Please also make sure you have completed a full SD Overwrite function using SD formatter. (Recommended on the Cycliq support thread) Please let us know once you have retested with the current firmware on the refreshed card.

Done the above and this has sorted it thanks

Awesome ! Glad you found the solution.

I just wanted to add that i would be happy with a utility that would automatically build the configuration file for me. Maybe sync time from the internet or the attached computer, build the file, then tell me to restart the fly6. It could be a simple exe that i keep on the SD card. Aside from that my new Fly6 is perfect so far.

Hi Sam.

Future models will have this feature including the Fly12 when released later this year!

Bluetooth and WI-Fi capability make syncing to your smart phone or computer a breeze.

Regards and happy cycling!

Anthony
